for cello, percussion and sound synthesis: passion, mystery, poetry…

In these compositions inspired by Sigrid Vandenbogaerde , Claude Evence Janssens first chose to write for solo cello, in an approach inspired by Baroque music, but also by repetitive-minimalist and post-modern music such as Phil Glass, Steve Reich and Arvo Pärt.

He then adds ambient synthesised sounds inspired by visual musicians such as Brian Eno. These sounds act as counterpoints and interferences with the cello monologue, via aerial samples counterbalanced by infra-bass.

The final touch is provided by percussionist Pierre Quiriny: using drumsticks and mallets, he interacts with the cello and pre-recorded electronics, to which he adds live samples activated by digital pads.

In the end, Sculpting is like the introspective journey of a character, lyrically embodied by the cello, on a journey where ambient sounds express the landscapes crossed, while the percussion instruments translate in counterpoint the facts, the accidents of life, which come and go, here and there…
